ALUMNI
In 1951, shortly after assuming the leadership of the Chabad Lubavitch movement, the Rebbe held a private audience with Gershon Kranzler, an American author and educationalist. During the course of the meeting, the Rebbe reflected on the immense accomplishments achieved in American society through the ingenuity and dedication of its citizens. However, contended the Rebbe, these achievements were largely driven by egoistic aims and interests - which needed to be replaced by an altered mindset and new priorities. “Primarily, we must live the life of social beings, with the responsibility and dedication of our best efforts for the community“.
This then is the Cheder‘s vision for its alumni – that they may be social interactors dedicated to strengthening community, and improving the lives of the individuals with whom they engage. They may chart a spiritual course, as Rabbis, shochtim, melamdim or shluchim. Or they may pursue a career in business, the professions or a trade. Regardless of the direction they choose, the Cheder hopes to imbue its students with a love of learning, a love of sharing what they learn and an altruistic outlook focused on making a profound contribution to the spiritual and physical welfare of their Jewish brothers and sisters in particular.
Currently in 5782-5783, Cheder‘s graduates are almost exclusively involved in furthering their own religious studies (or assisting younger colleagues as shluchim), in some of Chabad‘s finest institutions worldwide. It is our fervent hope many of them will ultimately settle back in Australia where, as religious or lay leaders, they continue and extend Chabad‘s celebrated outreach and humanitarian pursuits.
